Ep.1/ Hitting Rock Bottom
The wisdom of Pema Chodron.
Some days, it feels like emotions such as anger, grief, sadness, anxiety, and pain are determined to engulf us in a dark abyss. You may have tried various self-care techniques like taking a long bath, journaling, talk therapy, going for a walk, or seeking comfort from your furry friend, but your mind and emotions remain trapped in an endless cycle of suffering. It can be exhausting to hold onto strong emotions that refuse to shift, leaving you caught in an ongoing loop of pain.
During times like these, I find solace in the wisdom of Pema Chodron. Pema Chödrön, an American Tibetan Buddhist teacher and author, guides us through difficult moments by inviting us to embrace our challenging thoughts and feelings. She encourages us not to run or hide from the discomfort but to lean in and face it head-on, even though it may seem counterintuitive. This technique requires a warrior's heart and mind, and it is best done with the support of counselling and caring friends and family with whom you can share your feelings.
"Stay with that shakiness – to stay with a broken heart, with a rumbling stomach, with the feeling of hopelessness and wanting to get revenge – that is the path of true awakening. Sticking with that uncertainty, getting the knack of relaxing in the midst of chaos, learning not to panic – this is the spiritual path.”
By staying with and befriending these difficult thoughts and feelings, with equanimity and non-judgment, you encourage greater insight, wisdom, and truth into your current situation. Pema Chodron's must-read texts include "When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times," "Going to the Places That Scare You," and "Start Where You Are."
You can watch one of her talks on what to do when it feels like you've hit rock bottom here.
